sister iodine‘Flame Desastre’ is the fourth album from the long established Paris based free wiggers Sister Iodine. Released earlier in the year in a vinyl only edition it has been re-mastered, re-sequenced and re-issued in CD format by Emego. The trio has been creating sun-bleached noise and primal lacerations for nearly 2 decades and this release finds them in typically aggressive form. Tracks like ‘Trope’ and ‘You Doped’ will rinse your ears out with the scorched feedback trails and crushed percussive batterings that recall the likes of Whitehouse or Sonic Youth’s more expansive noise sections. It is, of course, easy to pass such music off as aimless noise, but doing so would be ignorant of the eruption of expression that’s going on. There’s so much aggression, gesture, repetition and response happening behind the molten noise core of the tracks to keep even the most skeptical of sound-fanatics satisfied. What’s particularly refreshing about this record is that in spite of it covering such well established free-noise territories is that it retains a juvenile enthusiasm and originality that is often missed. Such musics are so much better suited to the performance scenario that such an accurate document of the trio’s saturated sonics can only be a real treasure. -- simon harris.
