DAS SYNTHETISCHE MISCHGEWEBE
Began in Berlin and armed with a visual education from the early 80's, they quickly became part of the international industrial cassette scene. Composing for light installations with open-reel machines, cassette recorders, microphone and guitar fuzz boxes with both loud, quiet, occasionally full blast and frequently sneaking in little sounds, all alternating within a few seconds create an electroacoustic anti-music. From 1987 to 1992 the group was based in Barcelona and since 1992 in France; in Bordeaux and Caen.
With unusual concerts in the underground network as well as in high art institutions and museums
(such as Centre Pompidou) and later on with performances for mixed media installation, exhibitions
and conferences on cognitive science and neurologic research related topics, the group toured with
changing casts since the early 80's, and participated in international festivals throughout Europe
and the US. Since 1982 they continue to produce vinyls, CD's and tapes on many international labels:
Discos Esplendor Geometrico, RRRecords, Hypnagogia, Vinyl-on-Demand, Auf Abwegen,
Harsh Reality Music, Equation Records, Das Cassetten Combinat and many others. With catch phrases such as 'ping pong particle accelerator' and 'the missing link between Merzbow and Pierre Henry', it has been attempted to pin down the groups variety of output.
Live and recording collaborations with musicians such as: The New Blockaders, Ralf Wehowsky, Frans de Waard, Ios Smolders, Zeitkratzer Ensemble, Artificial Memory Trace, The Oval Language, ERG, MSBR, Toy Bizarre, Roel Melkoop, Thierry Madiot, Radu Malfatti, Vestige Vertical, Stéfan Rives & Agnés Pallier, Claus van Bebber, Tore Honore Boe and others. [-hyph-] is a solo endeavour by Berlin based audiovisual artist and composer Nicolas Wiese. The project has been started in 2001 as an anonymous assembly of rough edged cut ups and media footage/urban soundscape collages, focussing on abrupt shifts/breaks in stimuli and perception. In recent years, the compositions of [-hyph-] have turned to more subtle and abstract constructions, bearing a lot of influences from contemporary chamber music.
The works of Nicolas Wiese have been performed / installed / screened at festivals, venues, museums and galleries like: Museum Weserburg / Bremen, Weezie Gallery for Contemporary Art / Leipzig, De Witte Zaal / Gent, Museum for Arts and Craft / Hamburg, Dogzstar / Istanbul, Raum2 / Kunstverein Mannheim, Hoerbar / Hamburg, Duotone Arts Festival / Kelowna, Canada, Altera! Festival / Avellino, Italy, ETH Digital Arts Week / Zurich, Imprimerie / Basel, Berlinische Galerie / Berlin.
Recent audio releases include a CD on the US label Tourette, a CD by the improvising trio Hughes/ Scherzberg/Wiese on Schraum, and a vinyl on Walter Ulbricht Schallfolien.

YREF is the solo moniker of Rainer Frey who was a member of Das Synthetische Mischgewebe
from 1985 to 1989, and also a member of many other projects such as Sticken In, Genetic Drugs, Hotel Conventionell, Nickola/Robben/Frey, Oel, Snow Blind Twilight Ferries, Herr Blum, Artattack, Fortified Static, Hexer, Monoblock, Timlin, stadt land fluss.
He did solo-guitar-performances in New York, San Francisco, Paris, Netherlands, all around Germany, Austria, Switzerland and nearly every club in Berlin and support act for the Melvins, Die Haut, Nick Cave, Einstürzende Neubauten, Stein, mc 900ft jesus, filmmusic for Michael Brynntrup and Pepe Danquard and with latest the livelooping festival.
On Saturday he will play a one-piece-livelooping-acoustic-guitar-set.
